The Last Diet You Will Ever Need

by Dr. Mark Hyman, for Huffington Post

Let farmers sell real food at markets

A hundred years ago all food was organic, local, seasonal, fresh or naturally-preserved by ancient methods. All food was food. Now less than 3 percent of our agricultural land is used to grow fruits and vegetables, which should make up 80 percent of our diet. Today there are not even enough fruits and vegetables in this country to allow all Americans to follow the government guidelines to eat five to nine servings a day.

Dr. Wilson responds:

I certainly agree with you that our “modern” diet is nothing short of a catastrophic disaster. The Twinkie was the moon shot of the Industrial Food Complex and since then things been going steadily down hill.

It is now clear that excessive fructose mainly from sugar and HFCS is the driving force behind insulin resistance and central obesity. Our industrial food supply is infused with loads of sugar and HFCS. When a person with insulin resistance consumes high glycemic carbohydrates, especially from grains, their brain is subjected to magnified glucose spikes. Over time these toxic levels of glucose can trigger a chronic brain disorder called Carbohydrate Associated Reversible Brain syndrome or CARB syndrome. People with CARB syndrome can develop up to 22 brain dysfunction symptoms that interfere with their ability to function. Because the brain plays a key role in auto-regulating fat stores, people with CARB syndrome start to store extra fat any virtually any caloric intake.

Thus it is even worse than you describe. We are destroying the health and brain function of our future generations. Now is the time to act before it’s too late. We need to go back to growing and eating real food.
