The American Psychiatric Association has created a real mess with their current classification of mental disorders. Grief is certainly a natural human emotion and it should not be medicalized.
What’s even worse is that many people who are now being diagnosed with traditional psychiatric disorders such as depression, ADHD, bipolar disorder and other conditions don’t actually have a mental condition. We now believe that many of these folks have a form of food-induced brain dysfunction that is correctable with simple dietary changes. Let me explain.
It is now clear that excessive fructose mainly from sugar and HFCS is the driving force behind insulin resistance and central obesity. The majority of adults and many children in this country now have insulin resistance. When someone with insulin resistance consumes high glycemic carbohydrates, especially from grains, their brain is subjected to magnified glucose spikes. Because high glucose levels are toxic to nerve cells, over time these glucose spikes can trigger a brain dysfunction disorder called Carbohydrate Associated Reversible Brains syndrome or CARB syndrome.
People with CARB syndrome can develop up to 22 brain dysfunction symptoms that overlap with many traditional psychiatric disorders such as depression, ADHD, autism, anxiety disorders, bipolar II, PTSD, OCD, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, eating disorders and similar conditions.
For example people with true major depression feel depressed, lose their appetite and lose weight. People with CARB syndrome sometimes feel depressed but they tend to have carbohydrate cravings, an increased appetite and weight grain. Because CARB syndrome has been completely missed by the Psychiatric community, they treat all depressed patients the same way—a big mistake.
