comments from experts:
John Yudkin was an early advocate of low carbohydrate diets later to be popularised by Robert Atkins in the USA. He was raised in London in a Jewish family that had fled the Russian pogroms of 1905. His father died when John was seven years old. His mother had to bring up five sons in very difficult circumstances. In 1933 he married Milly Himmelweit, who had fled from Germany. They had three sons and their marriage lasted 60 years.
John Yudkin was Professor of Nutrition and Dietetics in the University of London from 1954 to 1971 and later became Emeritus Professor. Born in 1910 he proceeded from Christ’s College, Cambridge, to the London Hospital and later did research work in the Biochemical Laboratory and the Nutritional Laboratory at Cambridge, where he was also Director of Medical Studies at Christ’s College. His degrees include M.A., M.D. (Cantab), B.Sc. (Lond.), M.R.C.P., and F.R.I.C. From 1945 to 1954 he was Professor of Physiology at Queen Elizabeth College, University of London. He has published many articles on biochemistry and nutrition.
Since 1957 he showed that the consumption of sugar and refined sweeteners is closely associated with coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Studies he conducted on sugars indicated that they raised blood triglycerides and insulin levels. He is lauded by Dr. Robert H. Lustig in his UCTV lecture, “Sugar: The Bitter Truth”, which may be viewed on YouTube (www.youtube.com/watch )

Dr. Wilson comments:
Thanks for the background information. Science is always on the move. The current experts are always wrong–just go 10 years into the future and look back and you will see what I mean. If you want to be healthy you need to find the future experts–those who somehow sense where science is heading and they get their before anybody else. John Yudkin was obviously a “future expert”. We need to honor those future experts who have lead us down the path to better health.
I find it absolutely amazing that John Yudkin figured this stuff out decades ago. What’s sad is that it takes so long for good science to find it’s way into the popular conscience. We figured out that cigarette smoking is toxic about three decades ago and finally we have reached a point where virtually everyone agrees that smoking is bad. Yudkin warned us about the dangers of sugar decades before this and even today people continue to consume sugar like there is no tomorrow. Those of us who understand the toxic nature of sugar need to keep spreading the word. Yes, it is an uphill battle. What else can we do?
What’s even worse is that sugar, HFCS and high glycemic carbohydrate carbohydrates are toxic to the brain. This raises the bar because no matter what else happens to your health you want to maintain normal brain function.
